Mt. Fuji

5th June 2021

Mt. Fuji really stands out from the land around it and that is one reason it is so famous. It can be seen from over 300 kilometres (over 200 miles) away. The snow capped top of Mt. Fuji is probably the most famous view in Japan.

Mt. Fuji – from Tokyo

Mt. Fuji is on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures. It is 3,776 meters ( three thousand, seven hundred and seventy six) high and has been a World Heritage Site since 2013.

Over 300,000 ( three hundred thousand) people climb Mt. Fuji every year, using one of four trails. There are some Shinto shrines on the trails. The trails can become very crowded in the summer.

It is an `active volcano’, meaning it can erupt anytime. It last erupted in 1707.

At the base of the mountain there are five lakes that are very popular in the summer months when they are much cooler than the land below and the main cities. Fuji-Q Highland amusement park is also near the base. It has some very fast and very scary roller coasters!

Mount Fuji – from the Shinkansen

Mount Fuji and Mt. Fuji are pronounced the same way.
