Mosquitoes like cloudy, windless days. They like places away from the sun and they come into houses. Most houses have window nets on them which are designed to stop mosquitoes and other insects from entering.
The mosquitoes in Japan don’t carry malaria yet but because of global warming they may do in the future. They can cause other diseases though. They do cause many people problems like all biting insects!
To repel or kill them you can use mosquito coils – 蚊取線香 (katorisenkō) outside and battery or electrically powered chemical emitters inside houses.
A katorisenkō is a coil that burns when you light it and it releases smoke. If people are outside in an area with mosquitoes for a long time they can put the mosquito coil in a case and attach the case with the smoking coil inside it, to their clothes.
Some people use patches with chemicals on them that they buy. They stick the patches to their clothes and that helps repel mosquitoes for two to three hours.
