③ A slide

” Do you know what a satchel is?”
” I don’t know.”
” I know what it is. I have it!”

” This is a satchel.”
” That’s right. Actually we are on one now!”

” The ones in Japan are quite shiny and good for sliding down!”

Many Katakana words come from Portuguese, Dutch, German or English. ランドセル (randoseru) comes from maybe both Dutch and German.

■ Most primary schools students have satchels as their school bags.

④ Our friend Dan

” The next word is `card´ and `board´ together-`cardboard´!”

“Here’s our friend Dan with a ball. In this picture we say he’s ダンボール. Hee, hee!”

“And in this picture he’s really ダンボール.”

In Japanese it’s ダンボール (danbōru). In English it’s cardboard. Cardboard is the material. It doesn’t just mean `box´.
