Chrysanthemum culture

23rd May 2021

Chrysanthemums were introduced into Japan from China over a thousand years ago. They are a part of the cultures in both countries.

In Japan, chrysanthemum images have been used in pictures, on kimono and on plates and bowls for many years. The 50 yen coin and the Japanese passport both have chrysanthemum images on them. You can often see small, yellow chrysanthemum with some food dishes in restaurants and yellow, plastic ones are sold with sashimi in supermarkets.

White chrysanthemums have been the main flowers at funerals in Japan for some years, although now other flowers are increasing.

Emperor Naruhito

Chrysanthemum is the official flower of Japan and a yellow type is the flower of the imperial family. The emperor of Japan is Naruhito and his throne is sometimes called the Chrysanthemum Throne.
